At Modalis, we understand that mental health challenges can affect people at any age. In certain circumstances, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) may be considered as a treatment option for adolescents under 18, particularly when other treatments have not been effective.
TMS is widely used for adults with depression and other mental health conditions. In younger patients, it may be considered on a case-by-case basis under specialist supervision.
Prioritising Patient Safety
Research into the use of TMS in adolescents is continuing, and early studies suggest it may be safe and well tolerated when delivered by trained clinicians. However, because evidence is still developing, treatment for people under 18 is considered carefully and may require additional clinical oversight.
Our team follows strict clinical protocols and prioritises patient safety in all treatment decisions.
Please note: Due to the developing nature of the brain in younger children and the current evidence base, we do not typically accept referrals for patients aged 14 years or younger. In exceptional cases, this may be considered following specialist review and close collaboration with the patient’s treating team.
When Might TMS Be Considered for Someone Under 18?
TMS may be explored for adolescents/teenagers when:
-
They are experiencing moderate to severe depression or another mental health condition
-
Standard treatments, such as psychological therapy or medication, have not provided sufficient improvement
- There are limited alternative treatment options and the potential clinical benefit outweighs the risks from treatment in this age group.
-
A treating Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist believes TMS may be appropriate
Because young people’s brains are still developing, treatment decisions are made carefully and collaboratively with the patient, their family, and their treating healthcare professionals.
Referral Requirements for under 18’s
TMS treatment in under 18’s requires careful assessment before proceeding.
For patients aged between 16-17 years old, before proceeding with TMS we require:
-
A referral for TMS (from either a GP or psychiatrist)
-
A letter of support for undergoing TMS treatment from a Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist (unless they are the referring doctor)
For patients aged 15 years old or below, before proceeding with TMS we require:
-
A referral for TMS (from either a GP or psychiatrist)
-
Two (x2) letters of support for undergoing TMS treatment from separate Child & Adolescent Psychiatrists (or x1 letter and x1 referral from two separate Child & Adolescent Psychiatrists)
Youth TMS Research at Modalis
We are currently hosting a number of research studies at our WA clinics, with ongoing collaborations with research teams from The University of Western Australia and The Perron Institute for Neurological and Translational Science. We currently have a number of studies available for those under 18 years of age.
For those who are eligible and interested in participating in the Youth TMS Study but do not have a current psychiatrist, the research team can help you organise an appointment with one of the Child & Adolescent Psychiatrists at the Perron Institute in order to undergo an assessment for suitability for receiving TMS treatment.
