Research & Communications Officer

Lauren

BSc (Hons) (Psychology), MNeurosci (Neuroscience). Currently completing a PhD (Neuroscience)

Lauren drives both our scientific research projects and science communication here at Modalis. She is also final year PhD candidate at UWA and the Perron Institute for Neurological and Translational Science, with a background in both psychology and neuroscience. She is most interested in clinical and translational research with real world applications in the mental health and neurological fields, and is passionate about spreading awareness about TMS and improving the treatment for patients. She also enjoys sewing, puzzles, and discovering the best Italian restaurants across Perth.

Scientific Research Experience

Lauren’s research involves using TMS in the context of treating depression, with a particular focus on using low-intensity stimulation (i.e. intensities below the resting motor threshold). Her research aims to help us understand more about how the treatment works on a biological level, using a variety of means such as MRI (to investigate the functional, structural, and chemical changes in the brain), neurogenesis, and blood marker analyses. More importantly, her research also aims to improve upon the protocols currently being used in clinics, to make the treatment as effective and accessible for patients as possible. This includes examining different stimulation intensities, stimulation frequencies, and accelerated protocols.

Anna has formerly participated with a leading research group at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and was involved in sleep research, studying the generation and functional significance of sleep oscillations in rodents on single cell and population levels. Anna utilised silicone probe recordings (by monitoring the simultaneous activity of multiple single neurons) and optogenetic techniques (by activating and deactivating selected cell types) as well as analysing and modelling the obtained EEG data. She also performed brain imaging, conducted rodent conditioning studies on sound discrimination and assisted brain surgeries. Anna also researched the role of conscious awareness in eye movements in an eye tracking study investigating relational memory by resolving controversies in the literature.

Lucy

Lucy is a TMS Clinician from our Fremantle and Cockburn clinics. After completing her degree in neuroscience and biomedical engineering, she continued with an Honours in neuro engineering investigating the biomechanical properties of brain tissue. Previously, Lucy has worked in private mental health, health promotion, and brain imaging. Lucy truly enjoys working with people, and also enjoys academic teaching with her past experience teaching math and neuroscience at UWA and engineering at Curtin University. Her hobbies include listening to music and baking without following a recipe.

Scientific Research Experience

Lucy completed a research Honours that combined her interests in both biomedical engineering and neuroscience. The engineering side of Lucy’s research centred around the mechanisms of a technique called optical coherence elastography (OCE). The neuroscience side of her research was to investigate the biomechanical properties of brain tissue (using OCE), in particular, the cortex, hippocampus, and cerebellum. Put simply, during Lucy’s research, she measured the stiffness of brain tissue. This research is important because tissue biomechanical properties (like stiffness) are becoming a key biomarker of disease. One example is during diseased states such as cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, where diseased tissue becomes stiffer. A revolutionary step in research has been to develop tools to measure the biomechanical properties of tissue. However, tools that can accurately measure the microscale variation of brain tissue biomechanics in 3D remain elusive. Lucy’s research was a small step in the development of such a tool, to hopefully add a piece in the puzzle to understand the brain's biomechanics and its function.
