Our Approach

At the forefront of brain health – The Modalis Story

Modalis was founded by three clinicians experienced in psychiatry, pain management and rehabilitation. Their commitment to research and sourcing the best treatment led to the establishment of Modalis, Western Australia’s first private, outpatient practice therapy clinic to specialize in TMS.

Since then, the founding group has established very close contacts with several other medical specialists of diverse specialties. This collaboration has increased the range of TMS applications and enhances the process of evaluating clinical outcomes.

Initially, Modalis offered its services in Subiaco but since 2021 has expanded to a growing list of locations. It is crucial to have this service easily accessible to all the patients who require TMS. We cherish our strong partnerships with Murdoch Psychiatry across the Perth Metropolitan region, TMS West in the southern part of Perth, the Aurora Marian Centre Private Hospital in Wembley, Pain Science in Joondalup, Bertram Family Medical Centre in Wellard, and Maia House in Midland.

With these partnerships, we are able to ensure that TMS is accessible to all patients across the metropolitan region and beyond. For specific convenient locations of Modalis and our partnerships see the Find a Clinic section.

Our Vision: To help people feel better. Our Mission: We aim to provide safe, effective and personalised TMS treatment grounded in best clinical practices.

The Modalis Approach

As WA’s leading TMS provider, we see the many benefits of this gentle and effective mode of treatment. Our aim is to bring these benefits to our patients and optimize their treatment and results, through our focus on their specific clinical needs. We do this by utilising leading technologies and expertise that provide both precise definition of stimulation sites and a broader range of treatment protocols.

Optimising the safety and effectiveness of treatments is our highest priority.

MRI-guided TMS allows us to guide the placement of the coil for the patient’s treatment using images of their own brain, to help account for the patient’s specific anatomical details of their individual brain structure, and place the coil on the target site with millimeter accuracy. This specific neuronavigation system was developed by Brain Science Tools at Utrecht University (Netherlands), and has been used extensively since 2004 in the research and clinical applications of TMS. Brain Science Tools works closely with Neurosoft and this collaboration has allowed a seamless integration of our neuronavigation tools with our Neurosoft TMS Machine.

Furthermore, at Modalis we have implemented very strict clinical and corporate governance procedures and protocols based on the current National Models of Clinical Governance Framework (NSQHS Standards 2017), Safety, Quality Improvement and Education Standards (RACGP), Australian Council of Heath Standards (ACHS) recommendations (relevant to outpatient clinics) and Quality Management System Standards (ISO 9001:2015).

Staying up-to-date with the latest science

Our treatment procedures and protocols are regularly reviewed and refined to ensure their compliance with the current research and their safety profile. By updating the treatment protocols we provide the highest standard of care, safety and efficacy to our patients.

Whilst TMS has been around since the mid-80’s, recent progress and refinements of the clinical protocols have led to much broader application of TMS in various areas of medicine. These include psychiatry, pain management, rehabilitation medicine and neurology.

At Modalis, we endeavour to stay abreast of the many international research projects in this field and constantly The range of clinical application is further enhanced through the utilisation of different stimulation coils, which provide varying characteristics of the generated magnetic stimulation beams and cortical penetration (depth of stimulation). MRI navigation can also assist in rehabilitation planning and cortical mapping.
